The premier league is just a tough betting market. Unpredictable, with a situation where any of the bottom 12 teams can beat each other. The relegation battle will be far more interesting than the title race which looks to be done.

Man United's woes

Looking at Man United's performance against Man City it is so easy to see their 2 biggest problems.

1) They simply do not have any midfield quality when Pogba is absent. The win rate with him in the team is 30% higher. Herrera and Mata are not the answer. Both are too small for the premier league, with no presence on the ball. They are OK in a team that is dominating, but don't have the power, pace and size to really influence a tight game.

Mourinho picked a team to contain the opposition, and try and hit them on the break. 4 runners upfront in Lingard, Martial, Rashford and Lukaku. It did not work because the gap between the front 4 and the defense/midfield was too big.... so the supply and deliver was abysmal. There was nobody able to bridge the gap and link the play. The result was aimless (dross) booting the ball into the channel.

2) Mourinho has become stale in my opinion. Sure, better than Moyes and van Gaal. But what did he do in this game when it was obvious his tactics were not working ? Answer = Nothing. Plan B seems to be to bring on another lumbering giant (Fellaini or Zlatan), hoof the ball upfield, and hope for the best. Should we not expect more for 13.5 million pounds a year ?

6 Team Relegation battle

The relegation battle will be more interesting this season. Swansea, Newcastle, Huddersfield, Stoke, West Ham and WBA are looking to survive. My feeling is that Swansea are the weakest team in the league. I feel that WBA and Stoke have the possibly the two worst managers.

Alan Pardew could be a disaster appointment for WBA. His record at Crystal Palace was poor and their away record was simply awful. No plan or structure in defending
What has changed and why should he be better now ?

Hughes on the brink at Stoke

Mark Hughes must be under big pressure at Stoke. Add a midweek loss to Burnley to another train smash last weekend. I watched the Burnley v Stoke game (a painful 90 minutes), which was played in a skill vacuum, in terrible conditions.

Stoke showed nothing. No plan, no quality, no clue. When Hughes replace Shaqiri he was greeted with chants of "you don't know what you're doing".
I think the (wet, cold, aggravated and irritated) travelling Stoke fans may be right !

Burnley v Stoke

Tues 2017-12-12
The premier league has just been a betting minefield this season. Man City are miles clear, but the 5 other top teams have battled for wins. Matches between teams ranked 8 to 18 are just difficult to predict. There are no outstanding relegation candidates, that have given up and look completely useless.

Stoke are one of those teams that are drifting downwards. They have been beaten 5 times in 8 games away from home. They have only managed to score 2 goals in a game in two matches away this season. When you are conceding goals, scoring 1 goal will not win you games.

Burnley have been pretty decent at home this season. Five clean sheets in 8 home games, conceding just 1 first half goal all season. There are some interesting stats here.

Burnley have been under 2.5 goals in every home game. They have been NO to "both teams to score" in 7 of 8 home games. I would expect this trend to continue, with another low scoring game here. What bets look good ?

Under 2.5 goals is a no go at odds of 1.57. It does indicate the bookmakers expect few goals here. No to BTTS is decent at around 1.75. I would have expected this to be about 1.65. The exact goals in game (0 or 1) is priced at 2.7 (paddypower and betvictor) and looks good.

My feeling is that in an unpredictable league, bet less and take slightly longer odds. The home win at odds of 2.35 is my bet here.

Home Win - Odds 2.35 (1 Unit)

Newcastle v Everton

Wed 2017-12-13
Newcastle are the worst performing team in the Premier league in the last 7 games. They have 1 point from a possible 21, losing 6 times. In their last 5 games they have conceded 2 or more 5 times. Defensively they are a mess. They have picked up 6 points from a possible 30 in their last 10 !

Everton have turned the corner under Allardyce. They will be semi-organised and tough to beat. Allardyce's teams always are. This is just a team that was poorly managed, but they will be better. Under Allardyce they have already picked up 7 points from a possible 9 points, with 2 clean sheets

I think that Newcastle get caught on the break here, and give up a goal or 2. Everton to win at odds of 3.3 looks more than decent, against a home team struggling with confidence and form.

Away win - Odds 3.3 (1 Unit)

West Ham v Arsenal

Wed 2017-12-13
This is a really tricky game for Arsenal. A London derby against a team that seems on the up. I am not a big David Moyes fan, but credit must be given to an excellent performance against Chelsea. Chelsea had an off day, but West Ham were good. Lots of energy and effort, not letting Chelsea play.

They now get their second home game in 4 days, while Arsenal travel again. The win against Chelsea will give confidence, and make them hard to beat.

Arsenal have lost 4 times away in the league this season. In only one game have they scored more than 1 goal. Put this down to the wrong formation, tactics or starting lineup. In my opinion, they are one dimensional, with no aerial threat. They were very lucky not to lose against Saints on Sunday.

Can Arsenal win this game ? I would not give them more than a 35% chance. Away from home, they don't keep clean sheets and don't score enough goals. Remove the fluke 2-5 against Everton, and away game goal production is poor.

The HOME double chance (Draw/Win) is very nicely priced here at odds of 2.3 . I think West Ham definitely get something from this game.

Home Double chance - Odds 2.3 (2 Units)

Hoffenheim v Stuttgart

Wed 2017-12-13
Midweek games in the Bundelsiga, throw up a couple on nice opportunities.

Stuttgart have been really poor in away games this season. They have lost 9 of their last 10 away, and have just 1 point from a possible 24 in 8 games this season. They don't have a single clean sheet in 10, and have conceded 2 or more goals in 7 of their last 10. Away form summed up in one world ... "Horrible".

Hoffenheim are more than decent at home. They come into this match off the back of an excellent 4-0 win over RB Leipzig. They also beat Bayern 2-0 at home this season. Can they win here? I think they will.

The home win odds are excellent (1.85), and I think this opportunity should be taken with a bigger than normal bet.

Home Win - Odds 1.85 (3 Units)

Man City v Tottenham

Sat 2017-12-16
Man City will slip up this season. The season is just too difficult and tricky, to not have an off day. Should they be priced at 1.44 to win this game ? To me it's a really poor offering.

This is the type of game that Tottenham prefer. Somehow they struggle to break down really defensive teams. They seem to play well against better teams, and are well suited to an open attacking game. Are they capable of winning here ? My feeling is yes. Can they get something from this game ? Definitely.

Everything has been going City's way. They have had no injuries, and have been able to come from behind and win games. A regular season, with games coming thick and fast, will throw up some curve balls. City just have not faced them yet.

My feeling is that the away double chance (odds 2.7) and the away win (7) are both decent here. Tottenham are a decent team, that has underperformed at the start of the season.

I think that Man City will score in this game. If Tottenham are to win it, they will need at least 2 goals. The Away win and over 2.5 goals is priced at 8.25

Away Win - Odds 7 (1 Unit)

Watford v Huddersfield

Sat 2017-12-16
Hudderfield are starting to battle. A combination of games coming thick and fast and a smallish squad is not a good one. Their away form is terrible, and I am surprised to see Watford priced at 1.8 for the home win. Huddersfield have not scored a goal in their last 7 away games. They had an opening day weird result against a really bad Crystal Palace, but after that it, travel days have gone downhill.

Watford are a strange team. They land up blowing games they should be winning. Everton, Crystal Palace and Brighton spring to mind. In two of those games they had a man sent off, and in the other the goalkeeper needed to be replaced. In the game against Chelsea, Richarlison had multiple opportunities to make it 3-1 in their favor.

My feeling is that they can perform a lot better, and there is misdirected potential in this team. If they click, keep 11 men on the field, and play half decently, they will win this game easily.

An interesting stat regarding Huddersfield is that they have lost 6 of 7 second half games away. 5 of these losses have been by 2 or more goals. SO they are getting overrun in the second half of games.

Watford win second half is priced at about 2.1 . The ASIAN hadicap (Watford -1) which is priced at 2.29 on bet365 looks decent. The conservative straight home win is probably a better bet here. Home Win - Odds 1.8 (1 Unit)
